Free parking across from the state park entrance on Back Mountain rd, enter the park and bear left past the auto road towards camp sites on the south end of the park. Road forks, bear right and continue up a small knoll past a few cabins and shelters where you will then see signs pointing towards the trail head. The trail winds up through the hardwoods in moderate fashion for a mile or so before reaching an open slabby area called Bald Rock, some partially obstructed views of the summit and the Taconic valley can be seen here. Caution around the ledges. Trail now descends through pine forest and then into hardwoods again as it parralels the mountain for a bit until reaching it's junction with the first auto road parking area. Trail continues west through parking area and back into woods but a nice view of the Connecticut river valley can be seen just across the auto road at the stone pavillion. The Futures trail continues more steeply now for another mile and change, winding close at times to the auto road, before reaching the final parking area where another sign will direct you up the Slot trail to the summit.
